The modding team behind a Grand Theft Auto V total conversion modification has stated that it was forced to stop development. The modification brought the map of the original Red Dead Redemption to the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V.
The modding team that was working on the total conversion mod, dot White, states that one of its primary members was contacted by a Take-Two Interactive representative who requested that the team stopped further development. Take-Two Interactive is the parent company of Grand Theft Auto franchise creator Rockstar Games.
The modification, which was titled Red Dead Redemption V, or RDRV, allowed players of the PC version of Grand Theft Auto V to play in the world of the original Red Dead Redemption game that was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in 2010.
The modding team was lead by modder Mr. Leisurewear who initially started development of the total conversion modification over two years ago in 2015. Development was not just limited to bringing the map to Grand Theft Auto V as the modding team even worked on the development of modding tools to more easily port over models from Red Dead Redemption to the game.
If the modification was released, it would have been the first time that PC gamers would have been able to explore the world of Red Dead Redemption. Although released seven years ago, the original title never made its way to the PC.
As a result of the take-down request, the modification's first teaser trailer was removed from YouTube and all that remain are three screenshots that showcased the modding team's progress when the modification was unveiled last month.
Take-Two Interactive did not publicly comment on why they forced the modding team to stop development, but it is likely related to the upcoming release of Red Dead Redemption 2. The sequel to the original title will feature a similar western setting in the same engine that was used by the total conversion modification.
While the future of the total conversion modification looks grim, some modders hope that the modding team will at least release the tools that were used to aid the development of the modification.
