Valve has shown a prototype of a new virtual reality controller at the Steam Dev Days developer conference earlier this week. The controller works in conjunction with the HTC Vive virtual reality headset.
The new controller features a motion sensor, a touchpad and several buttons to perform actions. The biggest difference with the controller that is currently shipped with the HTC Vive is that the new controller is able to detect if a user opens or closes his or hers hands.
The new detection capabilities will allow gamers to pick up objects ingame without having to press a button, enabling a whole range of new gameplay mechanics.
The new controller works by attaching it to your hand with a strap to prevent players from dropping the controller during gameplay.
The new controller is still in development so it could be that it will never end up being a retail product in its current form.
